One theme that can be seen when reading “The Shawl” is survival. The whole story revolves around survival since it is concentrated on them being in a concentration camp during World War 2. The camps were very hard to survive and required will power and the help of those around you to make it through alive. They had to have the will power to make it through things such as walking from one camp to another without stopping and having little to none sustenance. Most prisoners would die or pass out because they were scarcely fed and worked hard. The fact that they faced these harsh conditions show their true will to survive.
