During the war that was going on in Iran many things were banned from citizens. Some of these things were cigarettes, alcohol, and even a simple deck of cards. Her parents chose to obtain their freedom by going to parties and drinking and smoking while there. Marjane chose something a little more simple to get her freedom and escape from the constant rules she had to follow. This was American pop culture and more specifically punk music. It was an escape for her when everything from the scarf to the gender inequality was getting to her. This was also one of the rules that her parents would allow her to break to receive the freedom that she needed.
